Protecting the Aboriginal Cultural Values of the Marine Estate

Working Together in the Macleay River Estuary

North Coast Local Land Services recently collaborated Fisheries NSW to fund and manage an Indigenous Green Team at South West Rocks. The team carried out bushland restoration on Dunghutti country in the Macleay River estuary.

Led by the Kempsey Local Aboriginal Land Council and South West Rocks Figtree Corporation, the team completed TAFE certificates in safe herbicide usage and first aid and received on-the-job mentoring and team leadership from local contractor Kosta Delimihalis. They worked together to identify and manage cultural values and ecological threats at the site and developed a management plan to ensure ongoing maintenance of the area.

The project was so successful that a second stage will go ahead, creating further work and learning opportunities for Green Team members and the protection of an important piece of Dunghutti land.
