Sheep and alpaca discussion workshop

Do you manage sheep and alpacas in the Eurobodalla region?

The Eurobodalla Farmers’ Network recently gathered on farm at Mogendoura to share ideas and strategies on managing sheep and alpacas on small farms and to discuss seasonal issues heading into a potentially dry summer.

These regular on-farm workshops provide an important social and peer learning opportunity for local producers to connect and discuss major issues such as barbers pole worm management, lambing issues and rotational grazing.

The workshop was attended by 19 land managers, facilitated by Col Langford and supported by Local Land Services staff, Mark Doyle (District Vet) and Andrew Taylor (Senior Agricultural Advisor).

The workshop included an open Q&A session before lunch, followed by a practical skills sessions and paddock walk in the afternoon.

Key Point of Discussions

  • worm test – know your worm burden and only drench when you need to
  • fat scoring  – wool can be deceiving, know the condition of your sheep heading into summer
  • soil testing and fertiliser – know what your soil needs and help your pastures respond to rainfall events in dry times
  • pasture and weeds – identify what you have, control what you don’t want and love the native species you have.
